A flour duster is a handy gadget that any home cook should have. In addition to flour, it’s a great way to add cornmeal, spices, or even sugar to a dough mixture without having to dump it all in at one time.

Looking at a flour duster, the container looks like a spinning top that is laid on its side. Clamps allow you to put pressure on the duster, releasing the ingredients by rolling it over the dough. You can use a flour duster to create fancy designs such as circles and curlicues, or anything else you can think up.

If you do a lot of baking, a flour duster is simply essential. They are usually relatively inexpensive, with most models setting you back about twenty dollars or less. They can be hard to find in the utensil section of your local supermarket, but they are much easier to locate in a kitchen supply or cake-decorating store. Even better, they are also widely available from many reliable online stores.

In some places, a flour duster is called a ‘flour wand’ interchangeably. Other people call them ‘flour sifters’; however, a flour sifter is really meant for other uses (sifting!).

To use a flour duster properly, all you do is roll it in the sugar, flour or other powdered ingredients. They work best with finely ground ingredients, but it will work with things like cornmeal. If you’re putting cornmeal on the bottom of a pizza dough, simply roll the duster in the mixture, then roll it onto the crust and flip the crust over. You can use a flour duster to add sugar, cinnamon, or cocoa after the goods are done baking.

If you don’t want to use a flour duster, you can try a mini flour sifter. This looks exactly like a regular sifter, but it is of course much smaller. These are a great way to spread sugar or spices evenly on to your dough or baking. You won’t be able to make fancy designs with it, but it is still something you should have on hand.
